Edinburgh closures and cancellations following the death of Queen Elizabeth II

Edinburgh and the rest of the country is now in a period of national mourning following the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

The news was broken by Buckingham Palace on Thursday evening (September 8), when a statement announced that the Queen had passed peacefully at Balmoral.

Plans are now underway following both Operation London Bridge and Operation Unicorn, which have detailed that her body will be moved to Edinburgh before being taken back to London.

Following the announcement, it is expected that her funeral will take place in 10 days time, with many businesses to close on the day or in the period running up to the event.

Edinburgh will also see the Queen lie in state at St Giles' on the High Street for 24 hours following a procession from the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

Here, we look take a look at the events that are due to be cancelled and the shops and venues that be be closed across Edinburgh in the wake of the Queen's death.

Road closures

On Friday morning, the City of Edinburgh Council released a list of roads around the city centre that have now been closed in preparation for the Queen's arrival in the capital.

Although not expected to arrive until Sunday, a series of routes around Holyrood and the High Street have been shut off, with the council warning of further closures in the coming days.

Events and attractions

Although many Edinburgh attractions will be open until the official day of mourning on the Queen's funeral, a number of venues have announced they will be closed from today.

Edinburgh Castle told ticket holders on Friday they would be closed for the day to allow for "ceremonial activities" to take place. However, the site has not given a reopening date at present.

The Royal Yacht Britannia also announced they would be closed to the public until the end of national mourning, with a statement reading: "All at The Royal Yacht Britannia are deeply saddened by the death of Her Majesty The Queen and would like to pay tribute to the unfailing and outstanding dedication, and service that Her Majesty gave to our Nation.

"Please note that Britannia will now be closed until the end of the period of official Royal Mourning. For those with pre-booked tickets, we will be contacting you in due course."

Edinburgh Zoo has also closed on Friday, with an update to come in due course regarding reopening. In a statement, the zoo said: "Our charity last welcomed her to Edinburgh Zoo in 1998 when her joy for creatures great and small shone through to everyone present."

The Edinburgh Riding of the Marches, due to take place on Sunday, has also been cancelled.

Speaking on social media, organisers of FLY Festival said they were also in discussion with the council over whether or not their three day event in Princes Street Gardens could go ahead.

Due to take place from September 16-18, the dance music event is expected to fall in the period of national mourning, with organisers set to issue an update in due course.

Restaurants and pubs

There are no official rules that restaurants and pubs should close, instead it will be up to the landlords and owners of individual venues whether they choose to shut.

Speaking on social media, the British Pub & Beer Association shared on Twitter: "We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Her Majesty the Queen. Her duty to our country has been extraordinary and our condolences are with the Royal Family. In the coming days we will work with our nation's pubs & brewers to pay respect in communities across the country."

Edinburgh charity Street Assist have also announced their late-night service will not be running on Friday or Saturday night, with a short statement saying: "We were deeply saddened to hear of the death of Her Majesty The Queen, the UK's longest-reigning monarch. As we mourn the loss of The Queen, our Director has taken the decision to cancel delivery this weekend. Our service will not operate tonight or tomorrow night."

Sporting events

The SPFL have announced that matches involving Hibs, Hearts and the rest of the top flight and below will not go ahead this weekend.

Lee Johnson's men were due to travel to Tannadice tomorrow afternoon to face Dundee United in a 3pm kick-off while Robbie Neilson and Co had a scheduled match on Sunday against St Mirren at Tynecastle after their European exploits on Thursday evening.

Speaking following the death of the Queen, Scottish Football Association president Rod Petrie said: “On behalf of the Scottish football family, I send my condolences to the Royal Family following the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

“We will join the nation in a period of mourning and reflect on the indomitable spirit that characterised Her Majesty’s long reign and the enduring legacy she leaves behind.

“Her Majesty’s love and affinity for Scotland is well-known and long-established and we at the Scottish FA are deeply saddened by the passing of our Patron.”
