A local resident in the area, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “There are police and fire engines everywhere and most of the roads are closed off.”

The Scottish Fire and Rescue confirmed that they were in attendance at the incident.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were made aware of a man climbing on scaffolding on St Mary’s Street in Edinburgh around 3.20pm on Tuesday, 15 November.

“A 33-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and enquiries are ongoing.

“A number of road closures were put in place while emergency services dealt with the incident. These have now been lifted and the roads have fully reopened."
