Edinburgh children needed for new medical trial to find common cold treatment

NHS Scotland are appealing for Edinburgh kids to take part in an ambitious new trial aimed at reducing the time children spend suffering with the cold.

Edinburgh and Lothian Virus Intervention Study in Kids, known as Elvis Kids, are looking for children under the age of 7 to take part in the scheme.

Set to take place at the Sick Kids, the trial will seek to discover whether salt water nose drops help youngsters shake off their colds more quickly.

Scientists will also examine whether the drops stop poorly kids passing on the illness to other children.

Families who sign up to the scheme will receive a £30 voucher and travel expenses to compensate for any inconvenience caused by partaking in the trial.

The average child gets 12 colds a year, with the symptoms two weeks or more, which can cause big disruption to life for all the family.

As there is no cure for the common disease, NHS Scotland are spearheading new initiatives to minimise its affect on kids in the country.

Similar trials will take place in Aberdeen, Wishaw and Kilmarnock, with the support of the Chief Scientist Office.

Interested families can get a free consultation with a specialist Elvis Kids study nurse by phone, video call or in-person.
