Edinburgh chihuahua café owner set to appear on hit BBC series

The owner of an Edinburgh Chihuahua Café is set to appear on the latest series of The Bidding Room on the BBC.

Tanya Salitura wanted to open a dedicated chihuahua café to share the love and support that her own dog, Ama, offered to her in times of need.

She made the announcement that she was accompanied by her chihuahuas to attend the studio and posted a photo with the show's host Nigel Havers.

In a snap shared on the café’s Instagram, three of the adorable little fur balls can be seen alongside owner Tanya and host Havers.

The post states: “The Chihuahuas have been busy filming @thebiddingroom today with @officialhavers.”

The BBC say that the concept behind the show is that members of the public, with interesting items to sell, come together with five dealers.

The dealers then bid against each other to try to get the best bargain.

But before they face the dealers, each seller has their item valued by auctioneer Simon Bower.

The auctioneer gives them information on the history and key characteristics of their piece, so that when they enter the bidding room, they have all the information they need to try to haggle the best possible price from the dealers.

All the dealers are spending their own money but have no idea what the sellers have brought in.

It is not known when the episode will air so viewers will have to keep an eye on the BBC website for further information.

The Chihuahua Café opened its doors in 2017 but appears to have really taken off thanks to social media platforms such as TikTok.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live last year, Tanya said: “Although this business is certainly about dogs, in particular Chihuahuas, at its very core, its heart, is just one best friend. Ama came into my life when I really needed her and she’s been by my side ever since.

“We’ve shared wonderful experiences together. Our first home as a real ‘family’, getting to compete in Crufts, moving to a new country; she was even my flower puppy at my wedding.

"But she’s also been there, pressed up against me, for all the lows, letting me cry into her fur and providing unspoken understanding and support. Because that’s what really true best friends are for.

“I’ve always had a special place in my heart for dogs but Ama showed me how special that bond really can be.”

Ama has been joined by other chihuahua buddies, Lady Bee, Cleopatra, Elsa, Faery, Gatsby and Hepburn, at the Frederick Street business.

During the same interview in August 2021, a spokesperson for the café added: “Our interactive animal experience allows you to take time to relax and indulge in some very rewarding company.

“Book a session and, once inside, our resident Chihuahuas will be roaming freely amongst guests for you to pet, cuddle, play with, take photos or simply observe and enjoy.”
