Edinburgh Asda opening new Greggs cafe as part of huge £3 million makeover

A new Greggs cafe is opening inside an Edinburgh Asda store.

Greggs will join Asian street food vendors Panku, who already opened up a small kiosk at the supermarket in Leith.

The move is part of a £3 million makeover as part of the store’s ‘food for now’ scheme.

The café will offer vegan sausage rolls and other Greggs favourites including breakfast rolls, sandwiches and wraps, pasta salads, sweet treats, cold drinks and freshly ground Fairtrade coffee.

Greggs have been working in conjunction with the EG Group to open up a selection of smaller sites across the UK.

Last year they celebrated opening up their 200th store together, at a petrol station in Cheshire, and have managed to create 1500 jobs in those seven years.

Greggs are currently advertising vacancies for their new cafe in Leith and say they are looking for the “kindest, friendliest employees” to keep their customers coming back.

Asda announced two years ago that they were closing all of its in-store meat and fish counters as part of efforts to increase its focus on the food-for-now market.

The counters will be replaced by hot food stations selling a range of cooked meals from different cuisines.

Preyash Thakrar, Chief Strategy Officer at Asda says they are excited to be able to offer their customers a Greggs bakers in store.

He said: "We are constantly looking for new ways to increase customer choice.

“By partnering with brands that fit with our core values of great quality and great value – like Greggs - we’re excited to be able to give our customers access to something new in store that we know they will love.”

Raymond Reynolds, Business Development and Property Director at Greggs says it will get their products out to more people.

He said: “We know that high quality food-on-the-go and convenience go hand in hand, and this trial gives us the opportunity to bring our range of products to more customers in new locations.”

Greggs have also been opening their new concept cafes in Primark stores in the UK in recent months.

The Asda Leith at Sandpiper Drive is open 24-hours but the store offers a quiet hour every day, from 2-3pm every day.
