Users on Twitter were quick to spot the ongoing incident, one saying: "Serious helicopter activity around Arthur's Seat again. It's not landing, so they must be searching for someone or something."

Another added: "See another rescue helicopter circling Holyrood/Arthur's Seat/ That is the second one in two weeks. Hope it's not drunk people falling over, I have seen that happen."

A spokesperson from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said: "The Coastguard helicopter from Prestwick has been assisting the Scottish Ambulance Service and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service with an incident on Arthur’s Seat.

"I can confirm that the helicopter winched one woman from the hill and transported him to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary."
