Edinburgh Arthur's Seat: Firefighters continue to tackle wildfire through the night

Edinburgh firefighters have continued to battle a fierce gorse blaze near Arthur's Seat throughout the night, with pictures showing flames originating from the scene on Monday morning.

The fire service were alerted around 10:30pm to reports of a fire near St Margaret's Loch in Holyrood Park, as huge flames and clouds of smoke could be seen as far away as Newington.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue mobilised three appliances to the scene and battled throughout the night to extinguish the blaze.

Images taken around 6:30am on Monday, February 13, show several small areas on fire. One eye witness who passed through Holyrood Park said at least one appliance was still in attendance.

They added that several firefighters could be seen patrolling the area with flashlights, as clouds of smoke could be seen rising from Holyrood Park hours later.

Several concerned on-lookers took to social media to post images of the inferno into the early hours of Monday morning, as it is currently unclear what caused the fire.

A spokesperson for the SFRS confirmed that one appliances remains in attendance to keep an eye on the area, with the blaze spreading as far as 50 square metres.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We were alerted at 10.30pm on Sunday, 12 February to reports of a fire affecting an area of gorse at St Margaret's Loch, Arthur's Seat, Edinburgh.

"Operations Control mobilised two appliances to the scene, where crews kept a watching brief during the night. The area affected measures approximately 50 square metres.

"One appliance remains in attendance today as firefighters work to make the area safe."
