Edinburgh armed police swoop on neighbourhood after man seen 'brandishing axe'

Armed police swooped on an Edinburgh neighbourhood following reports of a man brandishing an axe.

Officers say the incident is linked to reports of a disturbance near Sighthill Primary School on Wednesday when a man was reportedly seen using an "offensive weapon."

Armed officers rushed to the Broomhouse Park area on Wednesday evening after a similar report and searched the area but could find no trace of the man.

Locals in the Broomhouse area reported a heavy police presence following the incident which started off with officers being called to Calder Grove at 2:40pm.

They also searched the area, near Sighthill Primary School, and enquiries remain ongoing to trace the individual. It is understood that the man was no seen within the school grounds.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 2.40pm on Wednesday, 16 November, police were called to a report of a man in possession of an offensive weapon causing a disturbance on Calder Grove, Edinburgh.

“Officers attended and carried out searches and enquiries to trace him. There are no reports of any injuries and enquiries are continuing.”
