Edinburgh and Glasgow airport departure updates - are there delays, queues and cancellations?

Holidaymakers throughout the UK have been facing long queues, delays and even cancellations over the last few weeks.

The disruption is being caused by staff shortages with high levels of sickness caused by Covid.

UK airports are also facing a spike in demand as many families head abroad for the school Easter holiday for the first time since coronavirus travel restrictions were dropped.

The disruption is largely concentrated to airports south of the border with Manchester, Gatwick, Heathrow and Birmingham among the worst effected by the chaos.

However, Scots travellers are being reassured that queues in Edinburgh and Glasgow airports are not out of the ordinary during school holiday season.

So, what can passengers expect in Scotland? Here's everything you need to know.

Is Edinburgh Airport experiencing delays?

Edinburgh Airport says queues are currently expected during certain times of the day in the lead up to the busy holiday season.

It added that any queuing and delays are being 'kept to a minimum' as staff manage the flow of passengers.

A spokesman for Edinburgh Airport said: "As is common in airports given the nature of them, queues are to be expected at certain times of the day and we did warn last week that passengers should be prepared for queues as we enter the busy summer season, but so far any queuing has been kept to a minimum and airport teams have managed the situation well."

Is Glasgow Airport experiencing delays?

According to Glasgow Airport, it is are currently not experiencing the queues and cancellations that other airports are.

Instead, passengers are simply advised to check the status of their flight before travelling as well as making sure they are prepared for security upon arrival at the airport.

Should I expect delays in the summer?

Last week, Edinburgh Airport issued a warning in a bid to prepare Scots holidaymakers for the upcoming busy summer season.

Summer 2022 will be the first time in two years that the airport will operate full services.

Edinburgh Airport has warned the travelling public to expect queues and disruption over the peak summer period as it prepares for a full service for the first time in more than two years.

The first busy season since 2019 will operate with less staff than pre-pandemic numbers with additional delays possible due to differing Covid entry requirements for travellers.

Edinburgh Airport explained that operations may take time to "readjust".

Gordon Dewar, Chief Executive of Edinburgh Airport, said: “The return of passengers to Edinburgh Airport is both exciting for the team here but challenging at the same time.

"During the pandemic, we lost many valued colleagues and our recruitment campaign to employ 1,000 people across the airport has been underway since the end of 2021.

“Not all of those additional people will be in place as quickly as we would like and therefore it is inevitable there will be some queues and disruption as the recovery begins and we take the first steps to normality.

“As we do that, we are grateful to passengers for their patience and understanding and ask that they allow themselves to carefully plan and understand what they need to do before they get here.

"We all want to put on as good a service as we can and will be working hard to do that, drafting in people from across the airport to support passengers and ensuring people have everything they need to get through the airport quickly and comfortably.”

Making sure that you are prepared before heading through security - for example making sure you have no liquids of 100ml or other banned items - as well as arriving in plenty time and keeping an eye on your flight's status prior to and upon arrival to the airport can help in terms of avoiding long queues and delays.
