Edinburgh Airport issues 'key' summer guidance to avoid queues and delays

Now that July is finally here, people across Scotland will be headed off to enjoy some much-deserved summer sun.

With it being the first summer since Covid restrictions ended, Edinburgh Airport has revealed that it has already been busier than at any point in the past three years. This means that queues and delays are somewhat inevitable.

However, according to the airport, there are a number of steps you can take to minimise the time spent waiting around. This means that, by following its advice, you're more likely to pass through and board your flight with ease.

In a statement on its website, Edinburgh Airport wrote: "There's no hiding from the fact that the increase in passenger numbers brings its own challenges. Particularly as we continue to recover from the pandemic.

We have seen some queues at security this summer - as an airport it comes with the territory - however our incredibly hard working teams have been doing a fantastic job of keeping you moving and ensuring wait times are kept to a minimum. The patience, understanding and co-operation shown by the vast majority of passengers has been fantastic, and something we're grateful for."

Here is a rundown of Edinburgh Airport's "key things to remember" this summer to keep queues and delays to a minimum.

Don't arrive too early

According to the airport, getting there too early before your flight can actually lead to longer queues — meaning a long wait for yourself.

It states that, in the last month, travellers have been getting to the airport as much as eight hours before their flight is scheduled to depart, which "adds to the congestion inside our terminal". The airport shares our security queue updates per day, which can be found on its social media accounts.

It adds: "Your best bet is to arrive in time for your airline's check-in desk opening. Use that as a guide. We've got a full list of check-in desk opening times on our website, and you can access it here."

Prepare for security

Edinburgh Airport states that "the best way to avoid any delays at security is to prepare properly", as this will mean that you won't have to wait around while your bag is being checked.

Here are the four most important things to remember when preparing to pass through security:

  • Make sure all liquids are taken out of your bag, less than 100ml, and inserted into one of the clear plastic bags provided by the airport.
  • Take everything out of your pockets, including tissues.
  • Remove every electronic device, including laptops and iPads, from your bag and place them in a tray separately, ensuring that nothing is covering them
  • Familiarise yourself with what is and isn't allowed in your hand luggage with the airport's guide.

Check-in online

Checking in online means you have one less thing you need to worry about on the day you travel, and can make your journey through the airport quicker.

When you arrive at the e-gates at the entrance to security, you should ensure you have your boarding pass to-hand and ready to scan regardless of whether it is on your phone or a physical copy. If it is the former, a screenshot will not work — it needs to be the original boarding pass.
