Edinburgh Aer Lingus flights cancelled amid staff Covid-19 outbreak

Several flights were cancelled by Aer Lingus today (Wednesday June 29), impacting flights to and from Edinburgh as the airline deals with a spike in Covid infections.

Just as we emerge away from Covid travel restrictions, travellers are now facing further stress as major airlines are being forced to cancel flights.

Aer Lingus cancelled 12 flights today to and from Dublin Airport, according to RVSP Live, with one set for Edinburgh. The EI3250 flight was due to take off at 6.40am but was scrapped due to 'crew illness', according to the airline.

This comes as airlines such as British Airways and easyJet have also been struggling with staff shortages due to a range of reasons. As a result, hundreds of flights have been cancelled and more are expected to be axed over the summer.

Along with the Edinburgh flight, the EI650 to Frankfurt FRA, EI552 to Lyon, EI684 to Geneva, EI356 to Munich, and the EI610 to Amsterdam were also cancelled from Dublin Airport.

Meanwhile the EI3251 from Edinburgh due to leave for Dublin at 8.25am was also cancelled.

On social media Aer Lingus directed passengers to their cancellations and refunds policies. In the policies, they said: "If you booked directly with Aer Lingus and Aer Lingus has cancelled on the day of departure or delayed a flight due to a disruption, please see Flight Disruption Information for the latest details on current travel advisories and options for rebooking or requesting a refund.

"If you booked via a third party (such as a travel agent, online agency or another airline), and your flight is cancelled you should contact the original sales agent directly."

An Aer Lingus spokesperson told Edinburgh Live: "Due to a spike in Covid cases Aer Lingus has been forced to cancel six return flights from Dublin today, Wednesday 29 June. Our teams are working to secure alternative travel options for customers in each case and wish to apologise to those impacted for the inconvenience.

"Just over one per cent of Aer Lingus flights have been impacted by cancellations this month. Should crew illness require the cancellation of additional flights in the coming days, we will seek to re-accommodate passengers on the next available services as efficiently as possible.

"Aer Lingus anticipated the return of demand for travel once Covid restrictions were removed and built appropriate buffers into our plans in order to deal with a reasonable level of additional disruption. System pressures and ongoing issues at some airports and among third party suppliers have created considerable operational challenges which have been compounded by a significant spike in Covid cases in recent days.

"We have shared detail regarding customers’ rights the airlines’ obligations under Regulation (EC) 261/2004 which can be found here: www.aerlingus.com/support/legal/regulation."
