Eddie Nketiah cannot wait to lead Arsenal’s line in Sunday’s north London derby against Tottenham and insists he would not have signed a new contract last summer if he did not believe he could be the Gunners’ main striker.
Nketiah has seized his chance while Gabriel Jesus recovers from knee surgery, scoring four goals in as many games since the World Cup break.
When asked if he believes he can be Arsenal’s no1 striker in the future, Nketiah said: “Of course. I just signed a new contract, and I wouldn’t have if I didn’t believe I could play, and I am sure the coaching staff believe in me.
“I try to focus on helping the team and improving as a player. I am only 23, I have still got a lot of years to grow and improve. I wish [Jesus] a speedy recovery. We want him back and we need him back for the team.
“For myself, I just go about it game by game. I know what I can do, I know what I can bring to the team, and it’s just about working hard and giving my all to be able to show that and contribute.”
Nketiah is a boyhood Arsenal fan and grew up idolising Ian Wright and Thierry Henry. He is now relishing the chance to emulate them against Tottenham on Sunday, with the Gunners looking to maintain their five-point lead over Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.
“I have always been an Arsenal supporter and I joined the club at the age of 14,” Nketiah told Viaplay. “I understand the importance of the derby. I know what it means to the fans and we are going to give everything to go there and try and get the three points.”
Arsenal suffered heartbreak at Spurs last season, as they were beaten 3-0 and eventually lost out on Champions League qualification. “We want to avenge that,” said Nketiah.
