Eddie Nketiah: Arsenal striker given No14 shirt after signing new deal to follow in Thierry Henry’s footsteps

Eddie Nketiah has a new shirt number to go with his new Arsenal contract.

The 23-year-old has committed his future to the club, signing a new long-term deal with the Gunners having previously rejected multiple offers from the club this season. Nketiah’s existing deal was set to expire at the end of the month.

Throughout the season, Mikel Arteta repeatedly voiced his desire for the striker to remain at the Emirates and he has got his wish, with Nketiah rewarded as he gets the No14 shirt to wear from next season.

Following Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s departure to Barcelona in February, the squad number had been vacant and Nketiah will now move away from the No30.

The No14 shirt comes with plenty of history as Nketiah follows in the footsteps of Thierry Henry, Arsenal’s all-time record scorer with 228 goals to his name. Since the Frenchman left the club, Theo Walcott and Aubameyang have been the only two players to take on that number.

There could be more news on the squad number front soon, with the No9 shirt free after Alexandre Lacazette joined Lyon on a free transfer.

Gunners fans will be hoping that number has a new home in the near future, with Arsenal growing in confidence that they will win the race to sign Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus.
