Eddie Jordan opens up on rebuffed efforts to visit Michael Schumacher after skiing accident

Eddie Jordan and Michael Schumacher go way back with Jordan having handed the motorsport icon his Formula One debut in 1991.

That sole outing for Jordan's team saw the at the time unknown German claim an impressive seventh place at the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa - which alerted Benetton to his potential.

The rest of course is history as the following season Schumacher took his maiden F1 Grand Prix victory at the same venue.

That historic win came on August 30, 1992 so with its 30th anniversary approaching next week, Mirror Sport spoke to Jordan about his memories of competing with and later against the fiercely intense driver who would go on to become the sport's most dominant figure.

Interestingly, the Dubliner doesn't necessarily go along with the prevailing sentiment that Schumacher is the greatest driver Formula One has ever seen.

"Is he the greatest driver of all time? I have some reservations about that. But that's just me. Everyone has their own opinion.

"There's no doubt that he certainly had the speed. But there were certain things that I never really liked about the way he went about his racing."

But his respect for Schumacher's ability and force of personality absolutely shines through in the full interview which you can find in Saturday's Irish Daily Star and Mirror newspapers in addition to Irish Mirror online.

Towards the end of the chat, Jordan reflects on his efforts to reach out to Michael after his life-changing skiing accident in December 2013.

He said: “Corinna, was at one stage a girlfriend of our driver Heinz Harold Frentzen, who later left and went on to marry Schumacher.

“So, there was connection and I reached out and one stage asked was it appropriate and did I think we should go and visit him?

“The answer was no. No visitations for anyone at that moment except the actual direct family.

“However, since then, young Mick Schumacher - Michael's son - has reached out to me, and he has been extraordinary.”

Mick Schumacher has followed in his father's footsteps by pursuing an F1 career with Haas.

Still only 23, he recorded his best-ever finish of sixth in last month's Austrian Grand Prix.
