The England boss held last-ditch talks with RFU chiefs on Monday afternoon in a bid to hold onto his Twickenham head coaching role.
The 62-year-old’s case is thought to have fallen on deaf ears however, with a decision to unseat the taskmaster Australian set to be ratified by the RFU board on Tuesday.
Leicester’s Steve Borthwick is the overwhelming favourite to take the helm, in what would prove a permanent appointment with a deal likely to extend beyond next year’s World Cup in France.
The RFU review is thought to have received mixed feedback on Jones, with senior players especially remaining impressed with his coaching and enjoying the England set-up.
But critical factions are understood to have increased within the organisation, across what could now prove a definitive 10 days following England’s autumn Tests.
Chief executive Bill Sweeney has overseen the RFU’s review of a miserable Autumn Nations Series campaign, where Jones’ men won just one of four Tests.
England have slumped to their worst set of calendar-year results since 2008, and now appear set to change their head coach less than 11 months before the 2023 World Cup.
Jones’ men have won just five of 12 Tests in 2022, albeit claiming a series victory in Australia en route to a dispiriting set of results.
England supporters met the side’s 27-13 defeat by South Africa with boos at full-time at Twickenham on November 26.
Warren Gatland’s return for a second stint as Wales boss was confirmed on Monday, ruling out the New Zealander from a short-term World Cup rescue mission with England, that the RFU had considered.
