Eddie Howe's 'very clever' approach to Newcastle's summer transfer window

Newcastle United's win over Leicester City has all but guaranteed their place in the Premier League next season, even though they're not mathematically safe just yet. The Magpies are 12 points clear of the bottom three and supporters have on eye on the upcoming summer transfer window.

When Eddie Howe took over at St. James' Park Newcastle had just five points and were rock bottom of the Premier League but have won a remarkable eight games of their last 12 games. Combined with the January transfer window, Newcastle have not only transformed this season's fortunes but have built a platform to kick on next year.

The arrival of Kieran Trippier and Bruno Guimaraes were real statements of intent, while Chris Wood, Matt Targett and Dan Burn gave Newcastle some much needed Premier League experience. The upcoming transfer window is set to be a historic one with Newcastle the richest club in world football.

Nonetheless, Howe has played down any talk of a "revolution" this summer. A tactic that former Premier League goalkeeper Paddy Kenny believes could be a "very clever" play.

Speaking to Football Insider, Kenny said: “Newcastle can’t go out and spend millions and millions to get a squad capable of getting into the top four, it just can’t happen. He has to come out and say that because any club who hears Newcastle are interested will add 20% or 30% onto their asking price.

“So it’s very clever from Howe to come out and say that, they can’t a precedent of overpaying for these players. There is also financial fair play and they need to keep an eye on that. I’m sure they will spend but it’s about doing it sensibly.”
