Eddie Howe has spoke of his disappointment that his Newcastle side were not awarded a penalty against Chelsea, as the Magpies fell to their first Premier League defeat in 2022.
The Newcastle boss felt that Trevoh Chalobah hauled down Jacob Murphy in the second period inside the penalty area but referee David Coote did not point to the spot.
The Chelsea defender appeared fortunate as he held Murphy's shirt before forcing him to the ground but the video assistant referee did not intervene to prompt Coote to change his decision
Howe said in his post-match press conference: "Hugely disappointed with the penalty decision. For me, it's a clear penalty. Jacob has had his shirt ripped almost off his back. VAR should see it and tell the referee to make his decision.
Kai Havertz scored the goal that separated the sides, but some felt the German could have been handed his marching orders in the opening half, as he left Dan Burn on the floor following an aerial challenge where he may have raised his elbow.
Magpies boss Howe couldn't help but return to the penalty however.
Howe added: "Dan thinks it's a clear red. It could've been given. The one I'm most disappointed with and don't understand how it's not been given is the penalty."
Pundits Micah Richards and Jamie Redknapp were unanimous in their agreement with Howe over the penalty.
Richards said: "This is crystal clear. Newcastle fans can definitely agree with this situation. Chalobah gets on the wrong side and he gets him twice, grabs him and then tries to make the tackle. I do think this one is a clear and obvious error because it puts him off balance."
"It is absolutely diabolical from the referee because you have the luxury of VAR," Redknapp added.
"Chalobah is one, going in with his wrong foot and it is a blatant penalty. If you can not see that and you have VAR at your disposal, David Coote needs to make better decisions."
