Eddie Howe rocked by second injury blow to full-back as Kieran Trippier left ground on crutches

Newcastle United were rocked by a second injury blow during their 1-0 win over Aston Villa.

With Kieran Trippier requiring crutches after the game as he set off for a scan, Eddie Howe was also monitoring a problem for Javier Manquillo who went off before half-time.

Newcastle will at least have Matt Targett back for next Saturday's game against West Ham but Trippier and the Spanish defender face assessments this week.

Speaking about Manquillo, Howe said after the game: "He landed awkwardly on his ankle, so I think there’s a ligament problem."

And expanding on Trippier's injury, with the full-back arriving at hospital with staff in a protective boot, Howe said: "Kieran got stamped on.

"He couldn’t continue because of a problem on the top of his foot.

"He’s gone for an X-ray at the hospital, and we’re keeping everything crossed that there’s no broken bone there."

Howe played up the praise for debutant Dan Burn who won man of the match at St James' Park.

He said: "I thought Dan was very similar to Matt Targett on Tuesday.

"I thought he fitted in superbly. I thought he was very calm and composed and used the ball really well.

"He put out a lot of fires for us with very good defensive decisions and positioning.

"I thought together with Fabian Schar, the pair of them played very well together.

"They were supported very well by the team in front of them though, and I do think the clean sheet was a real collective effort, from back to front.

"That started with Chris Wood again.

"A lot of his work would have gone unnoticed from a defensive perspective, but he was excellent, as was the team."
