Eddie Howe outlines Alexander Isak plan after positive Newcastle return

Eddie Howe has insisted that playing Alexander Isak for just 45 minutes was always part of the plan at Sheffield Wednesday.

Isak had two chances in the FA Cup tie and was denied by Cameron Dawson in the Owls goal. Howe swapped Isak for Chris Wood at half-time with the New Zealand striker also missing a big chance.

When asked about Isak's return to action for Newcastle, Howe said: “He's fine, that was the plan, to play 45. We wanted him to warm up and to give him every chance to play his best football in that 45 minutes. I thought he did very well, he was lively and had chances to score."

And reflecting on the early exit in general, Howe said: “We were desperate to win the game. I picked a team I thought was strong enough. I thought the moments and chances were there for us but we weren't clinical enough.

"I'd be the first to say if I thought it was a lack of effort or commitment. I saw a team that was committed and gave everything.

“We have some great professionals and they're hugely disappointed. For me it was our goalscoring that was the issue."
