Eddie Howe insists VAR mistakes 'shouldn't be happening' as Chelsea penalty call still rankles

Eddie Howe admits he is still furious over the VAR blunder that cost Newcastle United a penalty at Stamford Bridge. The Magpies boss now takes his team to Everton but says he was left fuming after Jacob Murphy was denied a penalty at 0-0 on Sunday.

The Toon boss said he got a brief but unsatisfactory explanation about the decision from referee David Coote after he initially got the decision wrong and VAR official John Brooks also made a mess of the call.

Howe said: “That is what VAR is there for, to slow the incident down and make sure that the correct decision is reached. How that’s not happened with the technology that we have, to this moment I’m still very frustrated by it.

"People can apologise and say it was a mistake, but it’s a mistake that really shouldn’t be happening when you have the time to make the right call.”
