Eddie Howe hopeful Newcastle United can sign player who 'will make a difference'

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has issued a transfer update after facing the Press for the first time on the club's pre-season schedule. The Magpies boss made it clear he is not satisfied with just three signings so far and knows the group needs extra presence to cope with the demands of the new season.

Speaking after the 3-0 win over 1860 Munich, Howe said: "We have definitely improved the group. But I do feel we have more work to do."

When asked if anything was imminent with a report suggesting Thorgan Hazard was a target, Howe said: "There is nothing to report, and we are still in the process of working very hard behind the scenes to try and improve the squad. That work is continuing every day, even from here. We are keen to add strength to certain areas of the team. It remains to be seen whether we can get a deal done."

Newcastle have tried to sign a clutch of players in the last month including Moussa Diaby. Howe would not be drawn on names, but said: "It is a difficult window, a difficult market, high prices and very limited availability. I am sure we can hopefully a land a player who can make a difference to us."

But after landing Nick Pope, Sven Botman and Matt Targett on permanent deals, Howe also said: "I am really pleased with the business we have done so far. Getting Matt back was a priority because he did so well for us last year. He is an outstanding player and an outstanding person and we have enjoyed working with him.

“Nick has come in and here is real competition for the goalkeeping place and he did very well today so I am pleased with that and Sven is someone we chased for a long time."
