Eddie Howe explains Joelinton's absence in Newcastle United's win at Fulham

Eddie Howe has explained Joelinton’s absence during Newcastle United’s 4-1 win over Fulham. The Magpies started without the Brazilian at Craven Cottage and Howe has now broken his silence on an injury suffered two weeks ago.

Speaking after the emphatic away win, Howe said: “Joelinton picked up a knee injury against Bournemouth (before the international break), and hadn’t trained. He wanted to be involved, the type of character that he is.”

But Howe made it clear why he didn’t risk him.

He added: "I wanted to protect him, knowing how important he is. He was there if we needed him in an absolute emergency, and my hand was forced with him.

“Hopefully, a week’s training will make a difference for him, and he’ll be back next week, and available for selection.”
