Eddie Howe explains his thinking behind Newcastle United tweaks against West Ham

Eddie Howe has explained that he was not prepared to risk Joe Willock at the London Stadium after he picked up a muscle injury.

The former Arsenal star was replaced by Joelinton in midfield while Alexander Isak was rested for the clash with Callum Wilson coming into the frontline. Willock and Isak were both deemed fine for the bench against the Hammers.

Howe said: "Joe had a hamstring problem."

With Newcastle already training in the capital to ensure recovery time is maximised, the fact the Magpies will be just across London to take on Brentford on Saturday, it was always on the cards that Howe would rest players.

Howe said: "It is a challenge for us mentally and physically to get back to those levels of performance. It is a challenge.

"The challenge is we have two quick games in succession at West Ham and Brentford. We will try to maximise our recovery."

Willock's withdrawal comes just days after a fine display and goal in the 2-0 win over Manchester United. Speaking after that game, the midfielder said: "I want to add more goals and assists to my game, and I feel like it will come. If I keep chipping away in training and working hard, I feel like it will definitely come.

“I’m a unique midfielder and I’ve got all the attributes to definitely play at the highest level, which is obviously playing for your country.”
