Eddie Howe confirms his 'ideal' Newcastle transfer situation for future windows

Eddie Howe has spoken about his "ideal" when it comes to business in transfer windows after landing Anthony Gordon from Everton for £45million.

The 21-year-old Scouser will be in the stands on one of the biggest nights in Newcastle's history as they face Southampton in the League Cup semi-finals at St James' Park due to being cup-toed. But he is set to make his debut later in the week against West Ham in the Premier League.

Howe underlined the importance of keeping his squad fresh and maintaining vital competition for places. The forward will instantly change the thinking for Howe and his coaching team in their frontline.

Howe said: "From my perspective, my ideal is to add a player in each window. I think it just freshens the group and is a new stimulus for everybody. You get that unique feeling when somebody walks through the door.

"He wants to impress his new team-mates, and they want to impress him, that is only helpful for the group. So that would be my ideal. You don't want the group to go stale.

"But of course it's got to be the right player and with ever increasing transfer fees it becomes more difficult, so I am really pleased with the business we have done."

Howe knows that new addition Gordon is not only a player for the now, at 21 he is a huge part of things moving forward.

Howe added: "We felt in that area of our team bringing in a player who was young and dynamic was the way that we wanted to go. "I agree he is for the here and now but also for the future. That is a great thing to have."
