Eddie Howe and Jurgen Klopp asked about angry Newcastle and Liverpool bench clash on touchline

Eddie Howe has admitted he has 'no idea' what happened after Newcastle United and Liverpool's benches clashed on the touchline on Wednesday night.

Tempers flared after Liverpool substitute Fabio Carvalho scored a late winner for his side in the 98th minute to seal a dramatic 2-1 win at Anfield. Carvalho's volley hit the back of the net long after the five minutes of allotted stoppage time were up, but referee Andre Marriner appeared to add further time on after Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope received treatment.

Liverpool's coaching staff, unsurprisingly, celebrated Carvalho's winner wildly, and goalkeeping coach John Achterberg made a point of sticking two fingers up. Objects were then thrown in the direction of Liverpool's coaching staff.

Simon Weatherstone, Newcastle's first-team coach, had to be held back while coach analyst Mark Leyland dragged a furious Fabian Schar away as Liverpool staff motioned to the unused substitute to sit down. So what happened?

"I've got no idea," Howe told reporters. "I was concentrating on what had just happened."

Liverpool staff, for their part, had been frustrated with what they perceived to be time wasting from Newcastle at various points throughout the game as a number of players went down with cramp and the Magpies also took their time with restarts. However, when asked about the touchline clash, Klopp offered a similar response to Howe.

"I didn't see it, honestly," he added. "I just turned in this direction to celebrate. When I turned around, I was surprised about what happened on the other side so I can't really say anything about it."
