Eddie Hearn questions WBC's decision to allow Tyson Fury time to decide future

Eddie Hearn has questioned the WBC's decision to hand Tyson Fury extra time to decide his future despite him having already confirmed his retirement from the sport.

The 'Gypsy King' recently defended his heavyweight title against Dillian Whyte having declared it would be his final fight in the boxing ring. But WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman has confirmed Fury will not face any set deadline as to whether or not he will vacate his belt.

Hearn insists Fury has not hung up his gloves and will likely pursue the winner of Anthony Joshua's rematch with Oleksandr Usyk later this year. "I don't know why he needs time, he's retired," Hearn told Boxing Social. "But no, look, we all know he's not retiring.

"He won't vacate the belt and I hope he faces the winner of Oleksandr Usyk vs Anthony Joshua II. I think that is a tremendous fight for his career."

Fury has remained consistent on talks of his boxing future, confirming that he is "done" with the sport after his victory over Whyte. However his wife Paris and father John have joined Hearn in suggesting he could be tempted out of retirement if Joshua defeats Usyk.

The British pair were finally set to settle their rivalry last year in an undisputed title fight, but Fury was instead forced to stage a trilogy fight with Deontay Wilder which saw Joshua defend his belts against Usyk. Fans have also been left unconvinced with Fury's retirement messages, after the 'Gypsy King' promptly backtracked to confirm he is willing to face UFC star Francis Ngannou in a crossover bout.

Fury is currently holidaying in France with his family and updated fans on social media that he is enjoying his time away from the sport. WBC president Sulaiman confirmed he will give the champion time to make a decision after completing his mandatory obligations last month.

"We're going to give him the time he needs to reflect, to relax, he just did the mandatory of the division," Sulaiman told Planet Sport. "There's no hurry to pressure him or his team into making any decisions. We will be in communications, he's having a holiday with his family.

"I'm not saying we will get him three months, there's no time limit right now I'm respecting the level of Tyson Fury, his private time with his family but we will talk in the near future certainly. We need to address the situation if he is retiring but at this time, we are just giving him the much deserved time to enjoy his holidays."
