Eddie Hearn provides Leigh Wood City Ground fight update after Nottingham Forest talks

Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has said that Nottingham Forest are keen to help Leigh Wood fight at the City Ground, with September earmarked as a possible date.

Wood was last in action last month when he overcame Mauricio Lara in a rematch in Manchester to regain the WBA featherweight title. After that clash, the Nottingham born boxer outlined his desire for his next fight to take place at the City Ground.

"I'll dig my heels in to get it," he told BBC Radio Nottingham in May ."I'll be 35 by the next time I box and I want that City Ground fight - it's my dream."

Hearn has now given the latest update on talks, revealing a phone call with the club about the potential of the City Ground hosting a fight. “We had a call today from Nottingham Forest and I spoke to Leigh this morning,” he told Matchroom Boxing. “We want to make it happen.

“There seems to be a keenness from the club to help us and help Leigh Wood make history in Nottingham with that fight. There’s a lot of moving parts but we’re working towards September at the City Ground, and we’d love to make it happen.”

Hearn has also outlined who Wood’s preferred opponent would be if the fight was to happen: “We want the Josh Warrington fight, that’s a huge fight for British boxing, there is the mandatory as well which we have to address. But if we have it our way, it will be the City Ground against Josh Warrington in September.”

The pitch at the City Ground is currently being relayed in preparation for the new Premier League season which starts in August. There could however be an opportunity with the September international break.

The international break, coupled with Forest facing two away games in a row, means that there is no game being played at the Stadium between August 19 and September 16. It means that there will be three spare weekends when the fight could potentially happen.
