Eddie Hearn praised for picking up Irish tricolour off the ground during Katie Taylor's ring walk

A nice touch from Eddie Hearn amidst the cauldron of Katie Taylor's ring walk in a sold-out Madison Square Garden has been hailed by Irish fans.

After a tricolour was flung in the direction of Katie and her team, the 42-year-old stooped down to pick it up and held it up high during what was a stunning entrance soundtracked by gospel song 'Awake My Soul'.

Mayo journalist Michael Gallagher was at MSG for the super-fight vs Amanda Serrano and drew attention to the nice gesture by Hearn.

He tweeted: "A big shout out to Eddie Hearn. During Katie's ringwalk a tricolour came through the air and landed on the ground.

"It wasn't walked upon or thrown to the side. Instead it was picked up and Eddie wore it around his shoulders. It might seem trivial, but to me it said a lot about him."

Another journalist who was over in New York to cover the bout, Cárthach Bán Breathnach, then shared the below clip.

He added: "Think this is the moment! Eddie Hearn lovely touch! You could feel the pride and the sense of history .

"Eddie is gladly a huge part of Irish sporting history. Next step is Katie Taylor fighting at home. If anyone can, Matchroom Boxing

can!"

It was a small moment that added to what turned out to be a momentous night for Katie and Irish sport as a whole.

The Bray native defied the bookies and conventional wisdom that suggested she was on the wane to produce a brilliant technical display.

While she did have to weather a storm from the seven-weight world champ during the middle rounds, she maintained her composure and re-established her superiority over the last few rounds to secure a split-decision nod from the judges.

Talk is already now turning to the possibility of a September rematch in Croke Park with both sides receptive to the idea.

Katie herself sounded very excited at the prospect of finally fighting professionally at home for the first time in the post-fight press conference.

She said: "We all want to see the best vs the best. Yeah, absolutely, a rematch would be absolutely phenomenal.

"If it was in Dublin, we could sell out Croke Park, if you think the atmosphere was special here tonight, imagine the rematch in front of 80,000 people in Croke Park. Absolutely amazing."

Hearn was also keen to make a Dublin fight happen after he was blown away by the atmosphere created by Irish fans at MSG.

He added: "That felt like Croke Park there tonight, it was absolutely incredible.

"I am not sure we will get as many travelling Puerto Ricans but it has always been on our minds and it would feel a big shame if she didn’t get to fight in Ireland during her career. If we could do that, back-end of the summer.

"It was a tough fight, she is going to need some rest. Not too much rest knowing Katie, but it is certainly in the mind of us all."
