Ed Sheeran to appear on RTE Late Late Show following death of Irish grandmother

Ed Sheeran will appear on the Late Late show this Friday in a pre-recorded interview following the sad death of his grandmother.

Ed is expected to chat to Ryan Tubridy about his grandmother Anne Mary (Nancy) Sheeran, who inspired his hit song Nancy Mulligan.

Ryan mentioned Ed’s upcoming appearance on his RTE radio show this week.

The Galway Girl and Bad Habits hitmaker was unable to attend the funeral at St Patrick’s Church in the village of Monaseed, Co Wexford, due to a copyright trial in New York.

Former nurse Nancy was buried in St Patrick’s Cemetery.

Ed, 32, spent many childhood holidays at her home in Craanford, between Gorey and Rathnew.

He wrote a song in 2017 for the well-known community worker.

Anne Mary, who was known as Nancy, previously spoke of Ed's song (RTE)

It was inspired by his granny and her Belfast husband Bill’s love story.

Ed previously described their relationship as a sort of “Romeo and Juliet romance”, which “was the most romantic thing.”

Nancy once told RTE that fame had not changed Ed despite his fame and success.

Ed is estimated to be worth €227 million.

Nancy said: "He came to Wexford every year on holidays once we moved here. I'll never think of him as famous. He's exactly the same as he always was when he visits and it's very rare because he's always working."

“When you think how he was working from the age of 14, you’d have to feel sorry for him. You know he’s so tired but he loved it.”

Nancy who was born Anne Mary Mulligan, died on April 25 at Castle Gardens nursing home in Enniscorthy.

Ed’s appearance on the Late Late show is to promote his new album, Subtract, which will be released that day.

To mark the launch he has invited Irish fans to a free listening experience at the Irish Georgian Society in Dublin that afternoon.

It’s part of a global listening event, where fans can hear it first, just prior to its release.

Subtract is Ed’s fifth album.
