Ed Sheeran shares unrecognisable footage of young Lewis Capaldi as he covers star's song

Lewis Capaldi looks totally unrecognisable in throwback footage of him playing Ed Sheeran ’s Small Bump.

The Scottish singer-songwriter experienced a full-circle moment last night when his musical idol performed one of his songs at his sold out show.

Ed, 32, paid tribute to Lewis, 26, after he hilariously urged fans to buy Ed’s album and not his own on This Morning on Friday.

And as a thank you, Ed took to the stage at the 02 Arena in London last night and played Lewis’ hit Someone You Loved to a 20,000 strong crowd.

Flabbergasted by the show of appreciation, Lewis took to his social media to post a home video of him at the tender age of 13, performing Ed's track Small Bump in his mum and dad’s living room.

He wrote alongside the heart-warming clip: "Me playing Ed Sheeran’s song to my parents in my living room when I was 13.

He then posted a second clip showing the moment Ed played a cover of Lewis’ first hit single to his audience on Saturday night.

“Ed Sheeran playing my song to 20,000 people all these years later,” Lewis captioned the second clip.

“Seems like a fair trade off tbh @teddysphotos x,” Lewis wrote next to the clip posted to his 6.1million Instagram followers.

“Most insane full circle moment,” he said in the comments.

Ed shared the clip on his own Instagram Story, writing: "Love this and love you @lewiscapaldi x."

While on stage at the 02 last night, Ed took a moment to gush over Lewis after his compliments on ITV the day before.

“Lewis is a good guy,” he began. “He said on national television, either yesterday or today, don’t buy his album, buy my album so I just want to be on my stage and say don’t buy my album, buy his album. Or you know, stream both!”

He then went on to cover Lewis’ Someone You Loved to a packed-out arena as the crowd belted the lyrics back at him.

Someone You Loved was Lewis’ big break track, topping the UK charts for seven weeks in 2019.

Lewis is poised to release his second album alongside a new Netflix documentary about the making of the record.

His film Lewis Capaldi: How I’m Feeling Now follows the singer in the months he spend making the album, but also focuses on heavily on his health and mental health struggles recently following his meteoric rise to the top of the charts.

Lewis' Netflix documentary will be released April 5 (Netflix)

Ahead of its release on April 5, Lewis said of the project: "When I saw the first cut I thought it looked like a film where I die at the end.

"Luckily things turned around and, as far as I’m aware, I don’t die at the end of this.

"It’s pretty vulnerable. There’s a lot of things in the film that were beginning to be resolved that are now resolved.

"It was a wake up call seeing the first draft. I was approached about it in 2019.

"Things were going well, I hadn’t noticed a twitch affecting my life and my anxiety was under control.

"Someone You Loved had been big and the album had done well and I thought the documentary would be the coolest.

"I had these big shows booked for 2020 and I thought I’d look the business.

"Then Covid and all the rest of it happened and it became quite an intimate thing."
