Ed Sheeran's Irish grandmother who inspired hit song dies aged 98

The grandmother of Ed Sheeran has died aged 98.

The news of Anne Mary Sheeran's passing was confirmed on RIP.ie earlier today. Ed Sheeran's hit song 'Nancy Mulligan' served as a tribute towards his grandparents, who overcame a religious divide in order to get married.

She died on April 25 in Castle Gardens Nursing Home in Enniscorthy. Her funeral mass will take place tomorrow at 11am in St Patrick's Church Monaseed Gorey.

Mrs Sheeran was a mother of eight and had several grandchildren and great grand children. She was praised on RIP for her involvement with her local community in Co Wexford.

She is survived by her seven living children Jim, Bill, Peter, Chris, John, MaryAnne and Bridget. Both of Ed Sheeran's paternal grandparents are Irish, with his grandfather Bill originating from Belfast.
