Ed Sheeran looks to end fish and chips feud with Danny Dyer with football truce

Ed Sheeran has responded to Danny Dyer calling him out for his comments about traditional fish and chip shops in London not being up to scratch.

Asked by Topjaw, the popular Instagram interview platform, to name London’s “most overrated” restaurant, singer Sheeran, 34, told recently told presenter Jesse Burgess: “One of my beliefs is that you should always be able to see the sea when you have fish and chips, so anywhere that does traditional fish and chips in London. It’s like getting sushi in Alabama.”

Proud East Londoner Dyer, 47, was having none of it however, with the Marching Powder actor telling The Standard: “That would only be a man who is not from London who would say that.”

He added: “I think he’s from Ipswich, which I think sums him up.”

The Shape of You singer took to Instagram to extend an olive branch—inviting the Rivals star to an Ipswich game and throwing in a compliment for good measure.

Sheeran acquired a 1.4% minority stake in the football club last August, becoming a passive investor but not a board member. He has been the club's shirt sponsor since 2021.

Taking to his Instagram story on Wednesday, he wrote: “@officialdannydyer Ipswich v West Ham end of May let's go, fish and chips before.”

Adding: “Ps love your filmography in full, we do Danny Dyer weeks on tour.”

Dyer is a life long West Ham fan, with his daughter Dani engaged to Hammers captain Jarrod Bowen.

The suggested truce follows Dyer’s win for Best Supporting Actor at the Royal Television Society Awards in London on Tuesday for his role in Disney+’s adaptation of Jilly Cooper’s Rivals.

Taking the stage, he declared, “What a result, I've got to thank Disney, I'm a Disney star now! Such a brilliant show—I think I've had a result here because there's so many brilliant performances.”

The former EastEnders star also gave a nod to his co-star Katherine Parkinson, with whom he was nominated. In the hit series, his character, businessman Freddie Jones, has an affair with Lizzie Vereker, played by Parkinson.

Dyer wrapped up his speech with a powerful message: “Shout-out to the working class actors, remember where you come from!”
