Ed Sheeran cancels Sunderland gig as Jubilee announcement hints at reason why

Ed Sheeran delivered to blow to tens of thousands of fans with tickets for his first of three Sunderland gigs in June, with the news that it had been a cancelled due to a 'scheduling conflict.'

And now, as ticket holders for the Thursday, June 2 gig at the Stadium of Light, are being offered tickets for one of the other shows on Friday or Saturday, despite them being advertised as 'sold out,' Ed has just been announced to have an important role in The Queen' s Jubilee celebrations happening the same week. An email sent out to ticket holders for the June 2 show on Wednesday morning read: "We regrettably must inform you that due to a scheduling conflict, the show at Sunderland 's Stadium of Light on Thursday, June 2 is unable to take place. We're still very excited for the Friday and Saturday gigs."

Those fans affected by the cancellation have hit out at the move, given that many of them had already booked hotels and transport for the show and now face having to fork out more money for the Friday or Saturday, with higher prices than the Thursday. And now, some of them have been left speculating that Ed might be needed in London on the Thursday, for rehearsals for the Platinum Jubilee event.

Ed has been confirmed as the main star of the People's Pageant event, due to take place in London on Sunday, June 5, but he may well be needed earlier in the week as preparations go on behind closed doors. Commenting on his involvement, Shivers singer Ed said: “I’m proud to be part of the celebration and it’s going to be a great opportunity to bring everyone together."

Other stars thought to be making an appearance in the televised event include Cliff Richard, Shirley Bassey, Torvill and Dean and Gary Lineker.

Those fans with tickets for Ed's cancelled show in Sunderland are being offered refunds if they can't make the Friday or Saturday shows.
