Easyjet customers issued travel warning amid suitcase rules after passenger denied boarding

Passengers set to fly with easyJet - and any other airline - have been warned to check what they can and can't take with them ahead of boarding.

It comes as one passenger was told they were being refused boarding due to the type of suitcase they had.

Because of this, she is now warning others to be careful about what holiday items they purchase amid a change in rules.

Taking to Twitter, Panodara Sykes, an author and journalist, wrote: "Beware anyone being so foolish to fly Easyjet - captain just refused to let us board our flights because our checked-in suitcases have USB ports (aka “smart bags”). Easyjet quietly changed their Ts&Cs a few weeks ago without telling their customers."

In response to a reply to her tweet, she later added that she received "no refund".

Other people response to her tweet with one asking if she had removed the battery. However the author explained that she wasn't aware of the change adding: "No we didn’t realise they had changed their conditions (we’ve flown lots with these bags before). It just would have been decent to have a reminder at check in on the screen, or even get called before we get to the gate so we can remove it and still catch our flight."

EdinburghLive approached easyJet for a comment regarding the situation. The airline said that they are not new rules and that none of their policies have changed. They add that in line with CAA guidance on the carriage of lithium batteries, they require any items, including bags, containing lithium batteries to be disconnected before they can accept them onboard.

A spokesperson for easyJet told EdinburghLive: "For safety reasons and in line with CAA guidance, we require items containing lithium batteries such as smart bags to be disconnected before we can accept them onboard. As Ms Skyes wasn’t able to do so, we unfortunately couldn’t accept the bag onboard or in the hold and she was unable to travel on this occasion.

“While we understand the disappointment this will have caused, safety is always our highest priority and we provide passengers with clear information on items which can be brought onboard and any restrictions, including smart bags, when checking in online and on our Help Pages at easyJet.com.”
