EasyJet cancellations: Refunds and compensation options if your flight is affected

On Thursday (May 26) easyJet announced they were having IT difficulties which resulted in at least 200 flights having been cancelled across the network with people forced to make alternative arrangements.

Many of today's flights from Edinburgh Airport seems to be unaffected by the issue with only one flight to Bristol at 8:50am this morning having been cancelled - though there is no indication that this was due to the IT issue.

Thankfully the error has been sorted with easyJet stating they have been "rectified."

In an updated statement the airline said: “easyJet can confirm that the earlier IT systems issues have now been rectified. Unfortunately, they resulted in some cancellations earlier today (May 26) and while we expect to operate most of our remaining flying programme some may still be subject to some disruption in the coming hours.

"We advise customers due to travel with us to continue to check Flight Tracker for the status of their flight before making their way to the airport. We apologise for the inconvenience caused and customers can apply for compensation in line with regulations."

But if your flight, for whatever reason, is delayed or cancelled, what are your rights?

What happens if my easyJet flight is cancelled?

Under European air passengers’ rights rules, easyJet must:

  • Ensure its passengers are flown where they need to be as soon as possible
  • Provide hotels and meals as appropriate

If your flight is cancelled, there are several options available to you which can be done by logging into Manage Bookings, their website or via the easyJet App.

You can:

  • Switch to another flight for free: You can search easyJet flights and make changes to your booking yourself via Manage Bookings. When making changes online, you can choose to change the departure or arrival airport to another one within the same country.
  • Choose a voucher for the full value of your booking: The voucher is valid for 12 months from the date of issue and gives you the flexibility to book travel anywhere on our network when you’re ready to fly. You can request the voucher yourself via Manage Bookings.
  • Request a refund: You can get a refund for the full value of your booking. Refunds will be paid to the account you made the booking with. We’re processing refund requests within seven days, and they may take a few extra days to come through to your bank account. Once you’ve submitted an online refund request, you can track the status of your request here.

If you've booked through a tour operator or travel agent, they will be able to help you with your travel plans.

In addition to this, easyJet state that if your flight is cancelled, they are able to offer you a hotel room for the night. This can be done after you’ve transferred onto a new flight in their app or in Manage Bookings.

When booking a place to stay, the airline asks that you book accommodation "which is 3 stars or equivalent like Premier Inn, IBIS, Holiday Inn, Hotel Formule 1, Travelodge or Motel-One.

"If you choose to book more expensive accommodation when equivalent hotels within our suggested range were available, we will be unable to reimburse the full cost of the accommodation."

Individuals should keep the VAT invoice in order to claim back expenses.

If your flight has been cancelled, the airline states they will try to get you an easyJet flight to your final destination within 24 hours of your original flight. However if that is not an option, you can transfer to another airline, take a train, bus or hire a car.

They add: "The alternative transport must be under comparable transport conditions to your destination and you will be entitled to claim reasonable transport costs back.

"Please ensure you obtain an itemised receipt, for more information on how to claim back expenses or for further help please refer to our expenses page, alternatively, you can contact us."

If the delay is more than five hours, you can change your flights for a later date however this depends on seats being available. Alternatively, you can cancel your delayed flight and apply for a full refund.

In addition to this, if a delay means you cannot depart until the following day, ground crew will arrange overnight accommodation for you and you should wait at the airport until you are given details of your stay as well as transport information.

They add: "If we’re unable to provide you with transport we will cover taxis, buses or local metro services to and from the airports, but we cannot cover unreasonable costs such as private limousines.

"We will arrange where possible, for the hotel to provide you with an evening meal (excluding alcohol) and breakfast. If the hotel isn’t able to provide you with food, we will reimburse you up to £25 per person per day (EUR/ CHF equivalent)."
