Easy Life frontman carried off stage after downing whisky at Glasgow gig

An indie band had to cut short a gig when the lead singer began downing whisky on stage and had to be carried off.

Easy Life frontman Murray Matravers knocked back five glasses of Scotch while he waited for an equipment fault to be fixed at Glasgow’s O2 Academy. But he ended up getting so drunk during what he told fans was a “whisky tasting experience” that he could not continue.

One audience member said: “Despite the technical fault being eventually fixed, Murray persisted in continuing his whisky tasting experience, even with his band attempting to play their next song. The experience left him so drunk he kept announcing the fact for a further few songs before being carried off-stage by bandmates.

"Guitarist Lewis Berry, returned. He said Murray was in a bad way, and wasn’t able to continue but they would return to Glasgow and be 10 times better.”

Leicester-based Easy Life, whose hits include Nightmares and Ocean View, were playing to a packed crowd when the drama unfolded an hour into their set. Another fan said: “It was funny at first but he obviously couldn’t handle Scottish whisky.”

On social media one fan wrote wrote: “The first 20 minutes of the Easy Life gig were great until he shotgunned five whiskies on stage and they had to call the gig off early, with him getting carried off-stage.”

The band wrote on Twitter: “Glasgow we f****** love you so much, it’s been a tough few days and we did you a disservice, we’ll make it up to you guys somehow.”

They deleted the tweet but a post said they would consider refunds. A source close to the band added: “Something was knocked over on stage and it caused everything to shut down.

“So people wouldn’t leave, Murray started to try to entertain them by drinking and because he’s not used to drinking that much on stage it got out of control. The band are mortified.”

The band’s management and The O2 declined to comment.
