London is set to be hotter than popular tourist destinations such as Ibiza and Crete over the Easter bank holiday.

As travellers plan to jet off for Easter face travel chaos, Londoners are set to bask in temperatures as high as 23 degrees on Good Friday.

This would make the capital hotter than both Mallorca and Madeira’s predicted 20 degrees.

Also it would be comfortably warmer in London than the 18 degrees expected in Malta, Ibiza and Crete.

Craig Snell, a forecaster with the Met Office, said: “The majority of the long weekend is looking fine and dry.

“For London and the South East on Good Friday, it may start off a little grey but as the sun gets to work on the clouds, there’ll be plenty of sunshine and we’ll probably see the warmest day of the year so far, as you might expect.”

He predicted temperatures of around 21/22 degrees but possibly as high as 23.

“It’s going to feel warm, certainly for this time of the year,” he said.

“It’s going to be similar for Saturday in London, with dry and fine weather, but it will be perhaps a smidge lower at 20/21 degrees.

“Easter Day itself, it will be a bit more on the way of cloud around, but it should still be bright.”

Easter Sunday’s temperatures should hit around 20 degrees and drop to a cooler 16 degrees around Easter Monday, with a “band of rain” around the middle of the day, forecasters said.

The Met Office has warned hayfever sufferers that pollen levels will be high in all of England and Wales over the bank holiday.

However, the sunshine means the country is likely to see its warmest day of the year so far beating temperatures of 20.8C recorded at St James’s Park on March 23.

It comes as those jetting off for the long bank holiday weekend faced severe travel disruption.

The consumer group Which called on the Government on Wednesday to crackdown on cancellations and delays.

It said the industry regulator should be given the power to fine airlines which ignore passengers’ legal rights.
