EastEnders' Rainie Cross leaves Walford in heartbreaking scenes as actress exits soap

EastEnders' Rainie Cross made a big decision tonight - as she departed Walford.

Rainie - played by Tanya Franks - and her partner Stuart have been struggling with the arrival of their baby Roland, and as Stuart battles breast cancer, he has admitted he's not been able to bond with the child and has been struggling with things.

Whilst the residents of Albert Square have now realised he's suffering from post natal depression, it was too late as Rainie headed off in a taxi to get some space as she vowed to be a single mum if that's what it took.

A source has now confirmed that Tanya has been written out of future storylines - but they didn't rule out her returning in the future.

"Rainie has always been a character that has come and gone in the show for stints and the story naturally reached a point where the character had an ending of sorts," a source told Metro.co.uk.

An EastEnders spokesperson confirmed: "We wish Tanya all the very best for the future."

It comes after it was revealed Stuart (Ricky Champ) would be leaving - but his exit storyline is not expected to happen until later in the year. It coincides with the arrival of new showrunner Chris Clenshaw.

"Whenever a new boss comes in, there's always going to be big changes and it's no different with Chris," a source told Digital Spy.

"He's been working hard behind the scenes since January and is really planning to shake things up, which means saying goodbye to some characters. It's nothing personal to any of the cast going, it's simply a creative decision - for big storylines to happen you have to say goodbye to people, that's the nature of soap."

Dayle Hudson (Peter Beale), Barbara Smith (Dana Monroe) and Kelsey Calladine-Smith (Jada Lennox) are all set to leave the show too as well as actress Maddy Hill - who plays Nancy Carter - decided to leave the show too.

"It’s been great revisiting Nancy and the Square over the past year but it felt like the right time to move on for now. I already miss everyone and feel so grateful to work with people I have so much love for," she said in a statement.
