EastEnders' Jean Slater 'drowns' in the sea in a wedding dress in new storyline

EastEnders ' Jean Slater (played by Gillian Wright) was seen wearing a wedding dress and drowning in the ocean in a new storyline.

Jean - who has bipolar disorder - wears the traditional wedding dress as she tumbles around in the sea in Southend in Essex.

In new pictures obtained by The Sun, the character can be seen casually swimming out to sea before things go wrong and she begins to drown.

The scenes, which includes daughter Stacey going into the ocean to save Jean - will be airing later this year.

Jean has been struggling with her mental health in recent episodes and appears to be suffering from a manic episode.

In photos released earlier this week, Jean can be seen running through a seaside fair, whilst her daughter Stacey Slater and Martin Fowler - played by Lacey Turner and James Bye - desperately search for her.

Dressed in her wedding gear, Jean is seen looking frantic as she runs around the location.

Not only has Jean been suffering from mental health issues lately, but she has also had issues with her physical health.

The character had yet another cancer scare, but it turns out she was okay this time.

"I think that she’s become stronger through dealing with cancer," actress Gillian said of her character.

"She’s become less timid and less scared, compared with how she was when we first met her in the early years. She has more courage."

"I loved doing the storyline [with Daniel] because even though it was a story that was sad, and it could have been doom and gloom, we actually had a lot of fun.

"I think that the relationship with Daniel made Jean more feisty, and more confident. Even if she’s wrong, she does it with confidence."

Stacey has been growing increasingly concerned with her mum's erratic behaviour.

A scene had Stacey alarmed when Jean revealed she was planning a surprise for the children and when she then pressured Stacey to tell Arthur the truth about Kush’s death - who was murdered at the hands of evil Gray Atkins.

After a few dramatic scenes go down, Stacey goes to desperate lengths to try and help her mum and even bans her from being alone with the children until she sees a doctor, but Jean only goes to Kat to try and convince her capable of looking after the kids.

EastEnders airs these scenes from Monday, March 21 on BBC One.
