EastEnders fans stunned at sudden double exit on soap as fan favourite quits Walford

EastEnders fans were stunned on Thursday evening as two characters made a muted and sudden exit from Albert Square.

The two fan favourites have left Walford for good as they bid farewell to loved ones on the BBC One soap.

Ricky Butcher, played by Sid Owen, decided to take niece Scarlett Butcher, played by Tabitha Byron, to his home in Germany for a new start after the drama surrounding her mother Janine, who was sent to prison.

Janine, played by Charlie Brooks, is facing trial for a litany of crimes from her most recent stint.

In low-key scenes on Thursday night’s episode, Ricky prepared for their new life as they said goodbye to his remaining family on the Square.

He had even proposed to girlfriend Sam Mitchell in the hopes she would come with him, but given that her son Ricky Jr is embroiled in his paternity drama, she knew he needed her more than ever.

Her decision came after she finally learned that he was the father of 12-year-old Lily Slater’s baby.

Sam and Ricky emotionally hugged goodbye as she said: “Sorry for hurting you,” to which he replied: “That’s alright, you’re putting your family first. I can’t blame you for that.”

“Thanks for letting me stay,” Scarlett told Sonia before getting in the car for their new life in Germany. “I know my mum was a bit difficult but I always felt safe in this house.”

Ricky and Scarlett then climbed into the car and drove away from Albert Square for good, leaving fans in shock at the sudden exit.

Taking to Twitter after the scenes on Thursday had aired, one wrote: "I love how close Sonia and Ricky still are, they grew up with each other like brother and sister it’s been sweet having Ricky Back."

A second said: "Ricky senior saying “that trumpet is the worst comeback since herpes” when Reiss and Sonia were playing them in the living room."

Another added: "Goodbye Scarlett don't be a stranger. I hope she comes back to the Square in a few years."

EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7.30pm on BBC One
