EastEnders fans have been left reeling at pregnant Lily Slater's unexpected request. On Monday night, the pregnant 12-year-old was nervous ahead of her 20-week scan.
To ease her worries, she asked her mum, Stacey, if she could host a gender reveal party for her wee one. Ricky Mitchell, who is the father of Lily's unborn child, was also feeling anxious after his mum, Sam, spoke about the responsibilities of parenthood.
Sam makes an off-the-cuff comment about how becoming a parent ruins your social life as you focus on a newborn, leaving young Ricky scared about becoming a dad at 12. Initially this comment put Ricky off attending the baby scan, but after some words of encouragement from Stacey, he went along to support Lily.
Both Ricky and Lily's concerns about being young parents are soon erased as the pair are overjoyed after seeing their baby during the sonogram. It's then that Lily shares her thoughts about planning a gender reveal party to share the sex of their child with their closest family and friends.
However, many EastEnders fans at home were left "cringing" at the "dystopian" announcement that two children would be allowed to host a gender reveal. Unhappy viewers took to Twitter to vent after the episode aired.
One fan wrote: "Gender reveal party……… THIS IS GRIM #EastEnders". A second added: "Gender reveal party, they’re just children themselves - so sad #eastenders".
A third chimed in with: "A gender reveal party for a 12-year-old. - I'm still trying to get my head around how wrong this is #EastEnders."
Another joked: "Gender reveal party, they’ll have cakes, jelly and goodie bags and everything. #EastEnders."
"The first gender reveal in the show and it’s for two twelve year olds … this sl is so dystopian #EastEnders", stated another.
