EastEnders fans have been left devastated for Whitney and Zack as they were given even more heartbreaking news tonight.
The pair bid a tearful and emotional goodbye to their baby in heartbreaking scenes on the BBC One soap last week, but in a cruel twist, they were given some tragic news tonight. The nurse returned to see how they were, just as Whitney had made the decision she wanted to go back to the Square and continue on with her life.
However, just as she decided she wanted to go, the nurse returned and began to discuss the next steps.
"I'm going home. What else can we do? Look, I'm not ringing home with good news. I'm not taking my baby home but I can still go home," Whitney told Zack as the pair clashed as they grappled with their own feelings about what had happened.
The nurse then knocked on the door, interrupted, and told them: "I know last night was hard for you both. Now, this is something we give to parents whose babies were born asleep to keep things in, teddies, blankets."
Whitney took the box, before asking for any paperwork they could have so they could leave.
"If there's any birth certificate or paperwork or whatever, can we get it now because we want to go?" she said.
It was then that the nurse broke the heartbreaking news, as she told the pair: "The thing is, there's no birth certificate. Legally, if a baby passes away before 24 weeks."
A fuming Zack quickly interjected: "So she's not a person? Our baby's in there, we've held her and you tell me she's not even worth a piece of paper. People might pretend she never happened but I don't," he shouted before walking out.
Fans rushed to social media to share their thoughts on the emotional scenes.
"Wow before 24 weeks they don’t get a birth certificate that’s so sad # eastenders," one wrote, as a second added: "Sitting crying at EastEnders, heartbreaking episode. Never been through losing a child but I felt that as a mother myself #Eastenders."
A third shared: "My heart breaks for Whitney and Zack #Eastenders."
The pair continued to struggle, with both of them seeking solace on their own. The nurse revealed her own heartbreaking story to Whitney, whilst another father at the hospital reassured Zack that Whitney needed him too. But with the pair, not an item, how will what's happened to them affect them going forward - and how will they both cope with their heartbreaking loss?
