EastEnders Doctor Legg actor Leonard Fenton dies aged 95 as tributes pour in

Tributes have poured in from fans and former co-stars for Leonard Fenton, after the EastEnders legend famous for playing Doctor Legg, died at the age of 95.

The GP everyone went to see in Albert Square,k whether they were expecting a child or seriously ill, Dr Legg was a well known character in the early days of the BBC soap from 1985 to 1989, including in the very first episode and making regular appearances until 1997.

Leonard officially retired from the role two years later in 1999, but went onto make numerous cameos, starring in a total of 267 episodes of EastEnders.

Confirming Leonard's death, a statement read: "he family of the actor Leonard Fenton are heartbroken to announce his death at the age of 95 on Saturday January 29. Best known for his role as Dr Legg on EastEnders, Leonard’s acting career spanned more than 60 years.

“He worked in TV and film and his long stage career included time at the National Theatre and most recently the Royal Shakespeare Company. He felt privileged to have worked with some of the greats of the theatre, including Samuel Beckett, Orson Welles and Jonathan Miller.

It added: “His passion for painting and singing pre-dated his acting career and was equally as important to him. He will be missed beyond words by his family."

Tweeting a picture of Leonard, the EastEnders Twitter account added: "Our love and thoughts are with Leonard's family and friends.."

Reacting to the news, one fan tweeted: "Sad news. For those of us old enough to remember EastEnders in the 80s Dr Legg was one of the mainstays, a memorable character played by a terrific actor."
