East Midlands Railway cancels trains due to heat

Rail passengers have been warned about the affect of extreme heat on services. East Midlands Railway (EMR) have asked people only to travel if necessary on Monday and Tuesday, with temperatures predicted to hit 37C and they have cancelled trains as a result.

EMR will be running a reduced timetable at the start of next week as a result of the extremely hot weather forecast. They added they were unable to provide alternative transport for the services that are cancelled/altered.

EMR explained rail tracks are typically 20 degrees warmer than the air above. As a result the extreme heat could cause the track to buckle and bend which poses a serious safety risk to Intercity trains which travel at speeds between 100 and 125 miles per hour.

Tips from EMR for passengers

  1. Keep hydrated. Carry a bottle of water with you and drink little and often. If you’ve got a refillable bottle, keep it topped up as you travel.
  2. Wear loose, lightweight fabrics; try to keep to natural fibres that won’t make you feel even warmer.
  3. Try to keep in the shade where possible; if you do have to go out in to the sunlight, remember to wear a hat and apply sunscreen.
  4. Avoid alcohol consumption – this can lead to further dehydration and make you feel more unwell.
  5. If you start to feel ill; tell a member of our team. We’ll do what we can to help you.
