Drones have caused some flights to be diverted from East Midlands airport on Friday, June 10, and the police have increased patrols to try and stop further disruption. There have been reports of drone sightings near nearby Donington Park as thousands of people arrive for the 2022 Download Festival as the first full day of live music gets underway. Early-bird rock fans have already arrived at the five day event headlined by Kiss, Iron Maiden and Biffy Clyro.
In a joint statement released by EMA, Leicestershire Police and Download Festival, officials warned against the huge risk to public safety by people flying drones in the area. The statement read: “Recent reports of drone sightings near Donington Park have resulted in some operational disruption at East Midlands Airport during the last 48 hours. This has primarily affected the night-cargo operation but a small number of passenger flights have been diverted to other airports this afternoon.
"The safe operation of the EMA aerodrome and the safety of the public at the event are a priority. Together, Leicestershire Police, Download Festival organisers and the airport continue to work closely to monitor the situation. As a result, both the festival organisers and the police have enhanced the number of patrols on site and the surrounding areas.

"The public are reminded that flying a drone in proximity to an operational airport is an offence under the Civil Aviation Act 1982 and is a huge risk to public safety. The police will take appropriate action if necessary.” Earlier in the day one person said on Twitter: "East Midlands Airport closed due to drones flying over head by idiots at Donington festival. Our plane has been rerouted to Leeds to refuel and wait." In a separate tweet, the same user added: "Refuelling and meant to be returning soon. Jet2holidays communication has been really good. Apparently 12 flights are waiting to land at East Midlands airport." Nottinghamshire Live has approached Jet2 for comment
The situation has caused disruption to the airport over the last 48 hours and comes after witnesses in Long Eaton reported seeing a 'UFO' over the skies on Thursday evening (June 9). The sighting came around the same time as planes were said to have been unable to land at the airport.
