East Midlands Airport incidents and how police target them to 'disrupt criminality'

'East Midlands Airport is an incredibly safe place.' That is how one member of the East Midlands Airport (EMA) security team described the site as emergency service workers spoke about criminal threats, including terrorism.

As part of Project Servator, officers work alongside the UK border force, businesses and the public as they attempt to "disrupt" security threats. A video was uploaded by Leicestershire Police as officers described the work that goes in to shutting down threats at East Midlands Airport.

Sergeant James Wakefield, part of the EMA protective security team, said: "Project Servator is a policing tactic we use here at East Midlands Airport. It's designed to disrupt a wide range of criminality, including terrorism.

"Our officers work together with the airport security, with businesses, with UK border force and the public in order to disrupt that criminality, including the information gathering that criminals need to complete in order to plan. We use a mix of highly visible uniformed officers and plain clothed officers too.

"We utilise automatic number plate recognition and live monitored CCTV in our deployments."

Inspector Stu Wood added: "Our staff are highly trained to spot the tell tale signs of someone planning or preparing to commit a crime. These tactics have been developed and tested by security experts and they are designed to disrupt hostile reconnaissance.

"That is the information and intelligence gathering that a hostile needs to be successful."

It comes as a huge haul of cannabis with a potential street value of up to £1 million that was bound for Nottingham was intercepted by Border Force Officers at East Midlands Airport.
