East Lothian woman uncovers ‘hidden note’ from the 1960s under her wallpaper

A ‘hidden note’ dating back to 1968 has been found under years of wallpaper in East Lothian.

Posting on social media, the image had locals discussing who may have written the note 55 years ago. As it turned out, other residents in Dunbar had found similar notes in their walls.

The note, which was found by Judy Newton in Dunbar, reads: “Papered by AS Laing, June 1968.”

In the process of redecorating her home, Judy stumbled upon the note and wondered if there were any relatives of AS Laing in the area. While no direct relatives have come forward, the identity of him seems to have been confirmed.

It’s thought that they were written by a painter and plasterer in Dunbar, named Alistair Lang. The business still exists, now operating as George A Laing Renovations and Extensions.

The Dunbar based family business has been trading for over 60 years, though whether or not they continue to leave messages under their wallpaper is yet to be determined.

One thing’s for sure, it’s a pretty sustainable marketing strategy.
