East Lothian mum tells how driver smashed through fence before driving off

An East Lothian driver smashed into a country farm where horses were being kept before destroying multiple fences and driving off.

The incident took place on Wednesday, November 10 shortly after 10.45pm and was later reported to police who found no criminality.

Kerry Swales, 37, who runs the livery at West Fenton Farm discovered the damage at 11.30pm the same night when she went out to check on her horses.

The mum told how she fears what might have happened and claims that drivers are constantly speeding along the nearby roads despite a 30mph speed restriction.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live Kerry said: "I went down to do a night check on the horses at around 11.30 pm and when I drove round the corner all the fencing had completely gone - obviously someone had driven through the fence and then drove off.

"I clocked the other side of the field was also completely destroyed between the footpath and the paddocks.

"There was nothing but would everywhere on the site. I went to make sure the horses were not injured - thankfully they weren't and realised that the car had just fled straight after."

She continued: "The horses are really spooked, they could've gotten seriously hurt or wandered out into the road. It's absolutely ridiculous you would cause that amount of damage and then drive off afterwards.

"The speed marks on the road showed it had driven up Gullane way so I inquired in the village to find out if anyone had seen a smashed-up car because judging by the damage on the farm the car would be pretty worse for wear too.

"When I was looking around the site and assessing the damage I found half a registration plate and took it to police when we reported it but they said there was nothing they could do with it.

"Eventually someone got in touch about a really damaged car in their cul-de-sac. We got in touch and found the vehicle responsible and contacted the police.

"When police came out, the owner of the car owned up and claimed he had just 'bumped' into a hedge so did not think to report it to anyone."

Kerry said East Lothian country roads between Haddington, Gullane, Aberlady all the way out to North Berwick are becoming more and more dangerous with drivers speeding along them.

She said: "The roads here are becoming a rat run. People come around them so fast and someone is going to die.

"There are children around here - I don't even want to think about what will happen. It's only meant to be 30mph but drivers come bombing down at about 90mph."

Police Scotland did look into the incident but established no criminality despite the wreckage of the car.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Officers received a report of damage to property near the B1345, Gullane, North Berwick, which is thought to have happened around 11.30pm on Wednesday, 9 November, 2022.

"Following enquiries no criminality was established."
