East Lothian mum gutted after kids' bikes worth over £1000 stolen from garden

An East Lothian woman has been left fuming after her children's bikes had been stolen from their back garden overnight.

Marie Lally, 55, posted onto an East Lothian Facebook community page after they were nicked, warning locals not to buy these bicycles from an unknown source as they were stolen.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live, Marie said: "I am angry and so disappointed that the girls won’t be able to cycle and make as much use of the cycle paths - something we really appreciated when moving here.

"We only moved to West Barns a few months ago. I am just so surprised that this has happened here, as it is a very quiet village, and a very observant community!"

The two bikes in question are a Trek Marlin6 2021 women's mountain bike, and a Gateway BMX Cult, worth over £1000 altogether.

The Trek Marlin6 mountain bike is worth a whopping £600, and the Gateway BMX Cult prices at approximately £499.95, meaning that £1099.95 worth of good had been stolen from Marie's garden.

Marie has since reported this to the police, and told local residents in a Facebook post: "Woke up this morning to find both bikes belonging to the girls, gone.

"Both bikes securely chimed and locked outside the back door. Bike 1 a Trek Marlin6 2021 women's mountain bike. Bike 2 Gateway BMX Cult.

"Please, if anyone attempts to sell you either bike, report to police.

"Gutted that this should happen in what is a lovely little village, and right outside my door!"

Locals advised Marie to ask around if anyone had captured footage of the robbery, with one comment reading: "Ask neighbours If they have any rung cameras."

Another comment read: "Omg that’s awful!! I’m downstairs bedroom as well and awake till late unfortunately never heard anything!"

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 12.20pm on Wednesday, 26 January, we received a report that two bicycles had been stolen from a property in West Barns, Dunbar.

“Enquiries are at an early stage.”

This news comes as a Midlothian man was forced to take two buses to his work, after his motorbike was stolen from outside his flat by callous thieves.

The theft is thought to have happened between the hours of 10:00pm on January 6 and 9am on January 7.

Kieran Taafe, 25, relied upon the vehicle to complete his 15 mile round trip to work and back and had also been using the vehicle to train to get a full license.

But the Co-Op team leader has said that he is no longer able to practice for his full license and is now required to take two buses to work in Edinburgh.

The bike is a Dark Blue and Red Honda CB125F and Kieran fears that it has since been stolen for scraps instead of as a joy ride.

Nonetheless, he wished to share his story to raise awareness of bike crime which appears to be getting worse in the Musselburgh area according to Kieran.

On the incident he said: “Bike theft is already quite a problem in Edinburgh, and it's now starting to trickle out to the communities surrounding, unless you've got it under a cover, or fitted with enough locks it's a target, from youths to organised gangs taking them for parts."
