East Lothian magnet fisherman recovers e-bike from river and reunites with owner

A Musselburgh magnet fisherman has managed to recover an electric bike from the River Esk and reunite it with its owner.

James Pearson, who lives in the East Lothian town, regularly partakes in magnet fishing, often taking trolleys out of the River Esk and reuniting them with their supermarket homes.

But James was met with an odd request on Monday June 13 to rescue an electric bicycle from the river at Goose Green.

He was able to remove the bike from the water along with an electric grass strimmer and a traditional shopping trolley.

On recovering the bike, James said: “Basically I was contacted last Monday from someone on the Musselburgh Folks page on Facebook regarding an electric bike in the River Esk at Goose Green.

“So I headed down and managed to retrieve the bike plus an electric grass strimmer.”

But his work was not finished yet, as the magnet fisherman wanted to reunite the bike with its owner.

He continued: “I then put a post up on my page - Musselburgh magnet fishing - and also Musselburgh Folks and Musselburgh streetclean looking to see if it belonged to anyone.

“On Wednesday I got a message from the owner's neighbour and then from Karin herself.

“I was very happy to return the bike to Karin on Thursday. I’m very proud to live in Musselburgh and happy to help keep its river clear of debris and if possible return possession’s back to their rightful owners.

“On a side note, I also removed a trolley at the wooden bridge and returned it to Tesco. All in an evening’s work.

"I magnet fish every weekend and when on holiday I will travel around Britain meeting other magnet fishing groups."
